How to choose reptile leashes and jackets
Some keepers of reptiles do so only with a view to providing a display so that the enclosed environment that is the vivarium, looks as naturalistic as possible and is attractive to view, just like an aquarium. Some prefer a more stark set up with the emphasis on easy-care, sterile environments. Whichever you are you may also be the type to make a real pet out of your reptile and for those of you who see your reptile in this way, leashes and jackets are probably going to appeal. Some small, quick lizards, nervous types and snakes are not suitable for leashes and jackets but many, such as Bearded Dragons, Water Dragons and Iguana’s are. Leashes and jackets are a fun way of keeping control of your lizard on jaunts outside its vivarium home.

Reptile Leashes.
Reptile ”Comfort” leashes are made from soft leather and are available in a variety of sizes and colours. The soft leather harness has two cut outs to accommodate the forward and rear limbs of the lizard. When fitted correctly they do not harm the lizard in any way as the weight and pulling action are spread over a large surface area rather like a sling. The leashes are adjustable for snug fit and maximum comfort. A lead is attached to the harness so gentle control can be exerted over the lizard. Never use sharp tugging movements. If the lizard becomes distressed or hyperventilates, return immediately to the vivarium. Most suitable lizards can be trained to accept leash control but be patient and gradually increase the periods of harnessing from just a few minutes at the outset to gradually longer periods of control.

Leather Jackets.
These black leather “Biker” design jackets must appeal to anyone into motorcycles, heavy metal or even Arthur the “Fonz” Fonzarelli. Without doubt, when adorned with one of these jackets your lizard will be the coolest rep in town. Made from lambskin and finely detailed they fit in much the same way as leashes above. These too are fitted with a lead.

Iguana Poncho and hat.
If you fit these to your pet lizard and don’t roll about laughing then you are already dead. This time your pet will conjure up visions of a most bizarre version of a Clint Eastwood type spaghetti western. Re-enact the gunfight at the OK coral and then watch him saunter off into the distance of a heat lamp generated sunset.

Any type of pet toy or accessory must not distress the animal in any way. Make sure that you take the time to acclimatize and familiarise both yourself and your pet with any such item.
