How To Choose An Aquarium Stand.
An aquarium needs to be positioned on a base unit that is strong enough to support it. The aquarium itself, especially the larger systemized type, may be quite a weight but this is significantly increased with the addition of that vital ingredient, water. Freshwater weighs around 10lb (22 kg) per gallon (48 litres) and saltwater is slightly heavier due to its greater density. There is, therefore, no point in positioning you aquarium on Grandma’s old chest of drawers or a quick D.I.Y. nailed together quick fix because this will end in a catastrophic collapse of glass, timber, water and gasping, flapping fish. The absolute best choice is an aquarium stand made specifically for the job.

Choosing An Aquarium Stand.
There are many designs of aquarium stand to choose from. The most important thing is to pick a stand that will support the aquarium base area and it must, therefore, be of the same size or larger than the aquarium base area. You may also want to consider whether the stand is to be purely functional or has to fit in with the house décor. Aquarium stands are supplied as either pre-built or in flat pack home assembly format.

Types of Aquarium Stand.

  • Wooden stands.
Wooden Stands are most commonly made from a fibre board with a coloured or wood effect finish. Many of these are supplied in flat pack self assembly form but there are many companies producing pre-built stands. Transport logistics dictate that Lifeforceonline are only able to supply stands flatpack. Wooden aquarium stands are available as Cabinets or Table Stands. Cabinets have cupboards that are useful for storing fish keeping paraphernalia or for housing filtration equipment such as External Cannister Filters and Ultra Violet Sterilisers. Table stands are plain and solid fronted or with an open recess without cupboard doors. Because Table Stands are of a more simple construction they are cheaper than Cabinets.

  • Metal Stands.
Metal Stands were once the most common types of stand available but now take second place to wooden stand types that provide a more furnished, less stark look. Metal stands are either box section or welded sheet steel construction. Almost universally the colour of choice for these stands is black. Box section stand are able to support two aquariums, one above the other and are often used by hobbyists that have multiple aquarium set ups. Some of both types may have scrolling or other adornments to give them a more decorative look.

  • Bespoke Stands.
Bespoke stands are ones that are specially designed and built to suit a special or non-standard aquarium or achieve a totally unique look. This type of stand can be provided by quotation basis from specialist suppliers such as Waterworld (waterworldonline.co.uk). Invariably a bespoke stand will be more costly than any of the options above but with a huge range of possible construction materials available anything is possible if the design and supporting framework is practical in engineering terms.
